5 Brands To Try in 2016

January 11, 2016

5 brands to try in 2016

Continuing with the theme of January which seems to that of wishlists and endless lists, today I wanted to talk about the 5 brands that I want to try in 2016, which have been on my radar for a while and I think should be on yours also, if you haven’t already tried them.

Also, this is a post in collaboration with three other fantastic beauty bloggers who are also writing their 5 brands that they want to try this year: Elizabeth’s blog is here, you can read Demi’s brands over here and you can find Christina over here. So make sure to check out their lists also!

Now let’s get started!

Anastasia Beverly Hills

Yes, I know what you must be thinking already. A beauty blogger who is not obsessed with her brow wiz or illuminators? You see, unfortunately, I have not had the chance to get my hands on any of her products. Funny enough, Anastasia Soare is actually Romanian, just like myself, which kind of makes me want to try her products even more. As we speak, I have two of her liquid lipsticks coming my way as well as a mini brow wiz which came as a freebie so soon I will get a chance to see what the hype is all about. Also I am really looking forward to trying So Hollywood, which is her golden highlighter- constantly out of stock though. I have heard that it should be back in a couple of months, so I will make sure to keep an eye out and snag it when it’s available again.

Tom Ford

Tom Ford is one of those really luxurious brands that you can’t not fall in love with when looking at their products as well as apparently the quality which is well raved about. I have been tempted so many times in particular by his lipsticks and the eyeshadow quads, but the thought of paying £38 on a lipstick simply did not allow me to take the plunge…yet. Also as a massive fan of liquid eyeliner, I heard incredible things about his Eye Defining Pen, so I would love to try that out also.

Jo Malone

This is a British brand that a lot of people are probably very familiar with. Again, since starting to watch Youtube, I feel like everyone is talking about them, in particular the fragrances, as they have scents that are very different from other brands, such as Mimosa & Cardamom,  Wood Sage & Sea Salt or Lime Basil & Mandarin. Also they have a full range of body products, as well as candles. Definitely one to look forward to, due to their uniqueness!

Last year, I really started understanding skincare a lot better and have upped my game, so this year I want to get even better at it and try and prevent all the bad things that start after the age of 25, which I will turn in May this year. I have heard so many bloggers raving about the Oskia Renaissance Gel as well as the Exfoliating Balm, which is both a physical and chemical exfoliator, which intrigues me so much! Definitely a pricey brand, but it’s all worth it for your skin.

Kate Sommervile

Last but definitely not least, another skincare brand that I keep hearing great things about. Kate Sommervile is an American brand which until recently has been very difficult to get a hold of in the UK, but now they started shipping here which is amazing. Caroline Hirons, who is THE goddess of skincare, is the one that introduced me to the brand, but since then I have read and heard so many other people rave about it, that I’m read to jump on the bandwagon. I am particularly interested in her Exfolikate treatment, which is dubbed ‘the 2 minute Hollywood Facial’, the Retinol night cream as well as the Goat Milk lotion, plus a million other products.

So there you go, here are my 5 brands that I can’t wait to try this year! What are some brands that you are really looking forward to trying this year? Don’t forget to let me know in the comment section below, I’d love to hear your thoughts :)

Makeup Revolution Highlighter – Nars Dupe?

January 8, 2016

Until maybe 6 months ago or so, I had never owned or tried on a highlighter and now I own more than 5 which is quite a lot for someone who loves a flawless, matte look. One of the first drugstore brands that I heard a lot about is the ever affordable Makeup Revolution and their highlighter in Golden Lights.

First of all, this has an insanely affordable price tag of £3 and has 7.5 gr of products, compared to say, Nars which only has 4g for £20 more. The case is a sturdy-ish plastic case with a transparent lid so you can see the product, which is quite nice. Inside, the product has a swirly pattern to it which makes me think of waves (damn I miss summer!), which make it look quite pretty and at the same time makes you not want to use it at all.

If you look at it just in the pan, you might think that this is a stark white, chalky product, however you’d be surprised that it’s an opal-gold highlighter with tiny golden shimmers. This is the type of colour that would work on fair girls as long as it’s applied lightly, as well as on medium to tan skin tones, with the golden particles giving a very summery, healthy, glowy look to the cheeks. as well as lightly added with what’s remaining on the brush on the cupid bow and tip of the nose.

A little goes a long way and I suggest you use a light hand unless you want like a disco ball (literally). In terms of the actual quality, it would be difficult to compare it to high end counterparts, as it’s a lots less finely milled, however for the price difference, it’s a great everyday product that makes you look like you’re glowing from within.

Unfortunately I do not currently own Albatros from Nars as I could not bring myself to spend £23 on that highlighter (I prefer slightly more muted highlighters) however one of my very good friends is simply obsessed with it and I have had the chance to play with it and it gives exactly the same sort of look from afar, however if you look closely, the MUR will slightly emphasize the pores if not applied correctly and could look a bit over the top.

Overall, I think this is a great drugstore/high street highlight that I would recommend to anyone trying to get into the highlight trend and doesn’t want to spend a small fortune. Also Make up Revolution has this highlighter in two other shades,a more pink version as well as a peach, more toned down version. You can find these in Superdrug, both online and in store, as well as on the Makeup Revolution website.

I hope you enjoyed this and let me know if you’ve tried any of the MUR highlighters and if they compared to any high end ones in your opinion. I look forward to your replies in the comments below.

10 Beauty Resolution for 2016

January 6, 2016

10 beauty resolutions for 2016Every year in January for about a week or more, all I do is make lists and create resolutions. Sometimes I start in December, but this year I only started at the weekend. While going through all the things that I would like to improve, I also thought of some beauty resolutions or little tips that I believe make a massive difference and will instantly make you feel better this year.

Always take off your makeup

When I was in university as well as working an almost full time job and trying to have a social life, sometimes I would come home too tired to even think about the makeup that I had on and simply fell asleep. This caused my skin to breakout instantly, usually the day after and it would take at least a week before going back to normal. Therefore, I decided to prioritize makeup removal no matter how tired I am, how late it is or let’s be honest, how lazy I feel. I know that a lot of people keep some makeup wipes by their bed stand and that can also be useful, but personally my skin does not tend to enjoy wipes as they’re usually too harsh. Instead I recommend trying micellar water on a cotton pad as a one step removal on the super lazy days or followed by an oil cleanser to get rid of the last bits. It will make a hell of a difference, I promise.

Use hand cream everyday

Especially at this time of the year, weather is not forgiving to our skin, in particular our hands, which are exposed all the time (hello browsing your phone in the cold while waiting for a bus!) so I suggest you always have a travel size hand cream in your handbag. If you are subscribed to any beauty boxes, you must have some laying around or if not, I recommend a trip to The Body Shop, which have so many great affordable options or L’Occitane. Also, you can find great alternatives in your supermarket, with brands such as Nivea or Garnier. Your hands will thank you.

Clean your makeup brushes

If you use makeup at all, that means that you use some sort of brushes. Even if you only use a powder brush or eyeshadow brushes, you should still wash them as often as you can. It is recommended that you wash them every 1-3 uses, in particular face brushes, as foundation and powder build up on the brushes can affect the way product is applied on our face plus, obviously, hygienic reasons. I am planning to write a post very soon on the best way to clean your brushes, but spoiler alert: baby shampoo and patience.

Shop your stash

Probably this is my favorite resolution of the year, as I love shopping in general. What I mean by this is that when you have a decent makeup collection, it is easy to get in a rut and use the same products over and over again. So, sometimes, say, for example once a month, grab a little basket or box and start ‘shopping’ from your own collection, by picking up things that you haven’t used in a while and adding them to your everyday routine. This makes sure that you use more of the products that you already own instead of constantly buying new ones.

Drink more water

Yes, I know, everyone and their mother keeps saying this, but I promise it’s so good for you! This time of the year, everything is dry (as mentioned in resolution no. 2 also) so water helps dry and dehydrated skin to appear plumper and reduces the visibility of pores and fine lines. While this will obviously not solve all your skin issues, drinking 2 litres or water per day will make sure that your body is working properly as well as giving your skin that ‘glow from within’ feel.

Invest in a good skincare routine  (not necessarily expensive)

As a makeup lover, one of the first things that I understood is that no matter how much money, time and effort you will put into your makeup, if your base is not as good as it can be, it’s a waste of time. So make sure that your skin is well taken care of: use a good oil cleanser, a toner suitable for your skin type, a serum to help you lock in that moisture, as well as a good moisturizer, plus an spf for the daytime. You can find my personal skincare routine here for more recommendations in terms of products. I personally enjoy French pharmacy brands the most  as well as natural products made with organic ingredients, which will not break the bank.

Prep your lips

Nobody likes a beautiful lipstick on cracked, peeling dry lips. Especially with the trend of the liquid lipsticks, which tend to be drying, prepping your lips is a must. After a shower or after brushing your teeth, use your wet toothbrush to run over your lips, gently pat them with a dry towel and then use a good lip balm before starting your makeup routine. Alternatively, you can make your own scrub with brown sugar and olive oil, or buy an already made one, such as Lush’s Bubblegum one, which tastes delicious btw. Also, make sure that you use a lip balm before you go to bed, as sleeping can cause your lips to dry also.

Make masks your best friend

Continuing my point from above about skincare, one of the biggest changes in my skincare routine in the last few years has been the addition of a good mask. These days we are spoiled for choice: we have peel off masks, rinse off ones plus the easiest of them all, sheet masks. Personally I like to use a mud or clay mask once a week plus lately I have been enjoying sheet masks which usually help with brightening and hydrating the skin. There are options out there for all budgets and all skin concerns, so don’t be afraid to try them out.

Sleep better

Last but definitely not least, it’s about going back to basic. No products can replace a good night’s sleep. I am guilty of staying late at night browsing the internet and waking up late, so this is one that I am taking very seriously. Even if you need 5 hours or 9 hours or whatever it may be, make sure that you listen to your body and go to bed when you feel sleepy instead of shutting down that feeling and watching ‘one more episode’ (don’t worry, you’re not alone). Other tips would be to make sure that you sleep with all the lights off as well as having a good temperature in the room: not too hot, as it will affect the quality of your sleep, while a room that is too cold is not ideal either. Plus try to not eat at least an hour before going to bed, as that may mess up your sweet dreams also.

I hope you guys enjoyed my 10 beauty resolutions and that you learned something new, or at least remembered some of the things that you have been putting off , as I know that I find myself doing that a lot.

Let me know what your beauty resolutions are for this year and I look forward to hearing from you!

Best holiday palette: In theBalm of Your Hand

January 4, 2016

As December has come to an end, as well as 2015, I just had to talk about what the best holiday palette is in my opinion, which is also my highlight of the month.  I have previously heard about this palette from the Balm from EmilyNoel83 and I instantly wanted it. I had decided to pick it up during the 50% sale on The Balm website, however the website crashed for several hours and then the palette sold out within minutes, so I simply ended up ordering it from Debenhams with a 10 % off voucher, which amounted to around £30.

The Balm in the Balm of your Hand paletteThis palette comes in cardboard packaging, much like other The Balm products if you own any- personally this was my first product from the brand and it allows me to test several products which is why I think it’s a great product. You will not be disappointed with the print on it, as it has several of the best selling icons, such as ‘Meet Matte Nude, ‘Bahama Mama’, ‘Frat Boy’ and, dare I say, probably most of their makeup products. This gives it a very fun and vibrant look, which I love. Inside you will find a decent size mirror, which is a nice little extra.

Also I feel like the palette is very travel friendly, with a magnetic closure and a very thin yet sturdy packaging. Also I have kept the sleeve that it comes with, as I think it could be useful for traveling, for extra safety. Also in terms of packaging, it very much reminds me of the Zoeva palettes, which are some of my favorite eye shadow palettes this year.

The Balm in the Balm of your Hand palette

Now let’s get into what’s actually inside this bad boy! This palette, which has written under the main name ‘Greatest Hits volume 1’ is probably the best way to describe it. It contains best selling products all put under one super cute roof. It has 4 eye shadows, 3 blushes, a bronzer, a highlighter, a cream cheek/lip product and a cream lipstick.  Also I think it’s safe to assume that they will be coming up with volume 2 next year or sometimes in the future, so look out for that in your news feed!

From left to right: Hot Mama, Instain Blush in Argyle, CabanaBoy and Bahama Mama

From left to right: Hot Mama, Instain Blush in Argyle, CabanaBoy and Bahama Mama

First up is the top row, from left to right in the palette and top to bottom in the swatch, which features Hot Mama – a shimmery peach shade that lifts skin and can be used as either a blusher or eyeshadow; Instain Blush in Argyle – a pretty, mid-tone pink; CabanaBoy – a deeper, berry shade that can work as both a blusher or a shadow and finally Bahama Mama – a matte bronzer.

DSC_0345The next row down contains the four eyeshadows and highlighter, from left to right in the palette and top to bottom in the swatch  we have two Shady Lady eye shadows – Insane Jane which is a stunning, silvery taupe and Mischievous Marissa – a bright copper. Next is Nude’Tude’s eyeshadow in Sexy – a muddy, matte cranberry, which is so great, as I was almost ready to buy that palette for this shade only. The last eye shadow is from the  Balm Jovi eye shadow in Lead Zeppelin – a deep khaki shot through with golden shimmer.

Last, but not least is Mary-Lou Manizer, which is the Balm’s best selling product and a cult product praised by makeup lovers worldwide. This is a light gold highlighter which would suit most skin tones up to medium tan I would say.

The final products can be used on the lips; firstly the mid-toned nude shade is from the How Bout Them Apples palette, and the The Balm Girls Lip Cream shade of Mia Moore is an incredibly pigmented red – I was not expecting it to provide such intense colour payoff and I actually loved it so much, that I had to run and grab the full size lipstick! Also I really love that this side of the palette with the cream products has its own lid which means that your cream and powders won’t be mixing up, avoiding one big mess.

Now, on to thoughts after using the palette: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the face products. I am quite fortunate with a medium, warm- olive toned skin which suits most colors in terms of blush and bronzers so I had a blast with all these colors. Initially I was quite disappointed with my Mary-Lou Manizer as I expected it to be BA BAM in your face sort of highlighter however mine was almost not there in terms of pigmentation and felt scratchy. I am not sure if this happened to anyone else, but mine had a film on top, so I had to use something to scratch it off and only after the product had great pigmentation and felt creamy as expected. I am in love with Cabana Boy and the Instain Blush and I feel like I now also want to pick up Frat Boy and more blushes generally from them.

The eye shadows have great pigmentation and are as buttery and blendable as you would expect. I find all of them to be very wearable and have used several times since getting palette. Also the best part is that the face products can double up as eye shadows so you can have a total of 10 eye shadows if desired, with a mix of matte and shimmery options.

Overall I would say that this is a fantastic product for anyone who wants to try The Balm products for the first time or wants a good round up on The Balm products in one place for convenience or to travel with.

You can still find it at Debenhams here so I recommend to go buy it RIGHT NOW!

Lots of love,

Claudia xx

Top 5: New Year’s Eve Red Lipsticks

December 31, 2015

Red Lipsticks for New Years' party: From right to left: TheBalm Mia Moore, Armani Rouge in 400, Nyx Soft Matte in Amsterdam, Mac Russian Red, Clinique Cherry Pop, Revlon Matte Balm Sultry

Hello everyone! My apologies for going missing for the last week. Christmas turned out to be a really busy time which really didn’t allow me to think much about makeup and blogging, but hey, I’m back now with some recommendations for bold lipsticks for your New Year’s Eve party! I know that Christmas is now gone, but I think that NYE is a great time to go all out with the glitter and red lipsticks so here are my top 5 for the occasion (plus an extra one because I couldn’t help myself!).

  1. The Balm BalmGirl Lipstick in Mia Moore (£13.50)

This one is my newest addition to an obsessive red lipstick collection and it has probably become one of my favorite reds ever. I do not currently own Ruby Woo but I feel like this is a close dupe. It’s a pure red that turns slightly more orange and blue based depending on your undertone. Personally I am fairly neutral, more olive-y so it looks pretty true red on me. I just love its creaminess and how well it lasts on the lips considering how hydrating it is.

2. Giorgio Armani Rouge D’Armani Lipstick in 406 (£27 )

I was very lucky  to pick this bad boy up  in a sample sale by L’Oreal and I have never looked back. It’s a beautiful dark red, almost berry but not really. Out of all thse lipsticks, this is the most long lasting, as it leaves a very strong stain behind. Also this is the kind of red that would suit absolutely anyone.

3. Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in Amsterdam (£5.50)

If you like the matte lipstick trend that are going around lately, but you have very dry lips or generally do not enjoy the way those feel on the lips, this is a great option for you. Amsterdam is a bright red that would last for maybe 2-4 h after which it would be to be reapplied. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful red that is very easy to work with.

4. Mac Matte Lipstick in Russian Red ( £15.50)

Need I say more? Russian Red is probably in my top 5 favorite lipsticks of all times as it’s very matte yet it doesn’t drag on the lips or crack, plus it lasts for a very long time, rivaling some new liquid lipsticks out there. It has a beautiful blue undertone which makes teeth whiter and automatically makes any look more put together and adds sophistication. Simply put: you need this in your collection!

5. Clinique Pop Lip Colour in Cherry Pop (£16 full size)

I got this one few months back with a magazine and besides the fact that it’s super cute in its small packaging, it actually  is a really great lipstick. I want to say that this is for the person that is not ready for a strong red lipstick or is looking for something softer, as it has a more pinkish hue to it, as well as a demi-matte finish. This is the type of colour that you could wear with minimal makeup and would add a lot of radiance and brightness to the skin.

Special mention:

Revlon Matte Balm in Striking (£7.99)

I wanted to mention this one as an easy throw it on type of option. As the name suggests, this is a jumbo crayon type of stain which offers hydration as well as colour. It has a slight tingle and menthol feeling to it, which makes it a nice refreshing option. This is, in my opinion, one to put on the morning after, when you can’t be bothered to reapply a lipstick, but you still want to look great. Also it’s so easy to apply that you don’t even necessarily need a mirror with this one.

I hope you enjoyed my red lip recommendations and let me know what other red lipsticks are your favorites ! Hope you all have a great beginning of the New Year and thank you for reading this :)

Collection Pro: Blush and Glow Palette review

December 21, 2015

In the last few months, I feel that Collection has really stepped up their game and have come with a lot of new great products as well as generally having some of the best products in the drugstore for such great prices. As part of their Pro collection, they came up with two face palette, including the Blush and Glow palette which I have previously seen on few blog, yet could not get my hands on it. The Pro range is limited edition and sells exclusively in Boots. I was very lucky to find it in a random boots and also for a really good price, as they have everything for under £4 so I paid £4 only for it!

It comes in a cardboard packaging, not the sturdiest yet it makes the product very light and easy to take with you as a face palette on holiday or even keep in your makeup bag if you have a medium to big one. I love little details such as the coppery writing on the top which give it a more expensive feeling than an under £5 product. The palette includes a bronzer, a highlight and two different blushes.

Now, let’s get into the more details. I did not want to review this product as soon as I got it as I wanted to have a chance to use it and give you a better idea of what to expect. First impressions were really good, as I enjoyed all the colors in each pan. Unfortunately the blushes do not have names, so I just refer to them as the pink and the peach however I think they would both beautifully on skin tones from fair to a medium tan I would say. Anyone with a darker skin tone might not find much use in this, as the bronzer and one of the blushes would not show at all.

Surprisingly enough, the powders are quite creamy, not incredibly powdery, which is really helpful when picking it up, as it doesn’t make a mess. Also I find all four of these to be pigmented enough and did not need a lot of building up, with the highlighter being probably the weakest one, but then again I am very picky with my highlighters so I think I am slightly biased.

Here you can see swatches for the four shades. As you can see, the bronzer is neutral with slightly warm toned, so again I am not sure if this will appeal to people that enjoy a very ashy color, however on my skin- around NC30, it shows up great and does not look muddy at all or orange. The highlight is quite a subtle shade and has some pink iridescence to it. The first blush is a matte light pink with a cool tone, very much suited for girls with fair skin or for someone who likes only the , while the other more peachy blush has shimmer in it however it still resembles a satin finish and is probably a fairly flattering color for a lot of people.

Overall, I would say that this is a great palette for someone who is looking for a going away palette or loves the convenience of having three types of products in one palette. Have you tried any of the Collection Pro range products yet or generally anything from Collection? Let me know in the comments below as I’d love to hear your thoughts.

One Brand Haul and First Impressions: Essence

December 16, 2015

One of the drugstore brands that I have been dying to get my hands on and try is Essence. The other day, Wilko was on my way so I stopped got few things so I can give you guys my first impressions and what I recommend so far.

Essence Matte Touch Blush in 20- Berry Me up

This is one of the products that I was very excited about, as I heard a lot of great things about it on other blogs and I have to say that it definitely lived up to my expectations. Essence has two options in their blushes, a shimmery one, and while that one is still beautiful, I am somehow always attracted by matte blushes, as I feel they allow me to build them up more if I want to without looking slightly crazy if that makes sense. I have only worn this one so far and I am happy with the staying power and definitely looking to get more shades. Also the size is very decent, as you get 5g of product for less than £3 which is very impressive even for a drugstore brand.

Essence Blush

Next, moving on to the eyes. I got two of their eyeliners: they had two different collections, so I decided to get one of each. I got a kajal pencil in 27 Samba Green, which was only £1, as well as a Long Lasting Eye Pencil in 09 Cool Down. I have not had the chance to wear these outside yet, however because I am a crazy  person, once I bough them (it was somewhere around mid morning) I went home and added each of them to my eyes on my lower lashline to see how they last and how they looked, as this is the kind of placement that I had in mind for them anyway.

I have to say that I have not seen much difference between the two. They are both creamy, even though the kajal pencil is wooden, while the long lasting one is retractable. I like both of these at first glance and application and I look forward to using them longer so I can have a proper opinion.

Long Lasting Pencil in Cool Down, Kajal Pencil in Samba Green, Lip Liner in Honey Berry and Satin Mauve

Next are THE MOST exciting purchase, which is their lip liners. Again, this is completely based off reviews that I read online which compare them to Mac’s lip liners, and they are only £1!!! They have a total of 9 colors in the range, however my Wilko was quite ravaged and they had very few left, so I grabbed these two in 06 Satin Mauve and 15 Honey Berry. Before we get into details, I LOVE THESE LIP LINERS!

They are so soft and long lasting. The colors are very vibrant so you don’t need to go over the same place 5 times- unless you really enjoy doing it, which again, is fine. Satin Mauve is a very Kylie Jenner-esque kind of color which can easy be worn on its own or under any lipstick of lipgloss. Honey Berry is a cool toned pink, which can resemble a purple depending on your skintone. In my opinion, this is the perfect shade for both fall and summer and can be worn with different type of colors on top to give it a different dimension: i.e wearing it with a red lipstick to take make it a more every day kind of color.

Long Lasting Pencil in Cool Down, Kajal Pencil in Samba Green, Lip Liner in Honey Berry and Satin Mauve

Long Lasting Pencil in Cool Down, Kajal Pencil in Samba Green, Lip Liner in Honey Berry and Satin Mauve

Last but not least, something that you will not currently find in my collection: a lipgloss. In my teen years, my go to look would be black khol eyeliner and a clear gloss. However these days, it’s more about the liwuid winged liner and a bold matte lip. However, as I was trying to pick up one more item to review, I was not sold by any of the matte lip colors, so I decided to break my own pattern and pick up one of their lipglosses. However, I forgot to mention that I chose a ‘mate lipgloss’. Yeah, that’s right- a matte lipgloss. I was like ‘what?’ and was not sure what to think so I chose a nude color, precisely 06 in Soft Nude.

XXXL Long Lasting Matte Lipgloss in 06 Soft Nude and Matte Blush in 20 Berry Me up

XXXL Long Lasting Matte Lipgloss in 06 Soft Nude and Matte Blush in 20 Berry Me up

When applying it, it has a mousse-y consistency and it applies kind of patchy so you have to really be stubborn with it and pay a lot of attention. The color that you see below is probably 2-3 times of going over it to make sure that it has a uniform color. Also, I was- and still am- confused by how it;s supposed to sit on the lips. It doesn;t dry down entirely, so it stays tacky on the lips for as long as you have it on. At the same time, it’s not shiny as a lipgloss, so personally I kind of looked as if I had a patch of color on my lips- also the color is not the best match, it pulls a bit orange-y on me.

I will definitely continue to try using it on top of different lipsticks as well as on its own or possible with one of the lip pencils to see if that makes any difference however so far I have not been impressed. Have you guys tried this before?

So these are my first impressions guys. All in all, besides the lipgloss, I am very happy with the quality of the products considering the price and I will definitely be ordering more- this time I might do it online as you can find the full range. You cand find essence in Wilko stores as well as online.

Let me know if you have any recommendations for me, as I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Beauty vloggers to follow right now on Youtube

December 14, 2015

As a pretty new blogger and hopefully soon to be vlogger also, I have gotten inspired by so many other amazing women who are killing it in the industry. Therefore, today I thought I would talk about my top 5 favorite vloggers that have inspired me to take my passion to a different level and actually put myself out there, even if some might find it superficial to talk about makeup and beauty all day or do not understand the way this industry works and how it can become a fruitful and fulfilling career.

These are in no particular order, as I love all of them dearly.

Kathleenlights– find her here

KathleenLight Kathleen Fuentes

Even though I said that these are in no particular, I was probably being dishonest, as I love Kathleen more than any other youtuber in the world!! She has been at it for quite few years now and I just love her style. She has a lot of product review videos, hauls and also some tutorials. As a preference, I enjoy watching product reviews, makeup collections, dupes and everything in that range. I can just find some tutorials slightly boring sometimes, especially when I don’t have the exact same tools and they just don’t keep me entertain me as much. Kathleen has created her own eye shadows and lipstick with Colourpop (in the photo above you can see her holding the eye shadows) as well as two lipsticks with Ofra Cosmetics. She is simply very genuine and I just loved her relaxed, Florida native relaxed attitude. Also, did I mention how gorgeous she is?

Emily Fox is a Canadian beauty vlogger that has been online for the last two years or so and she is OBSESSED with lipstick. I have discovered her while googling some swatches for Nyx lipsticks and her face and swatches kept coming up. I had never watched a lipstick swatch video before so I was like ‘okay let’s see’ and then I watched another and another one and…yeah you get the idea. She has the cutest accent ever (French Canadian) and in my opinion the best lips for swatches. Also she started branching out in more general make-up videos, like hauls and more high-end make-up so her channel is never boring.

Hail to the queen! If you are a beauty lover and have never watched one of her videos, what are you doing with your life? Emily Eddington has the most down to earth, calming, soothing voice and aura that someone talking about make-up could have. With a background in broadcasting, Emily is one of the most successful vloggers that  has not yet sold her soul to the devil ha. She has a very honest, in depth style of reviewing things and is not afraid of changing her mind if she uses a product and then changes her mind. I strongly recommend you watch her videos before making any major purchase :)

Cheers to my love of Canadian girls! Jamie has been making videos for around two years and even though I have only been watching her videos for a month or so, I feel as if I’ve caught up with most of her videos :) She is a freelance make-up artist and I can say that she definitely knows what she’s doing. She posts two videos a week with a mix of reviews, tutorials and also some other beauty and lifestyle topics. Also she makes this amazing swatches music videos while lip syncing which I love- definitely go check her out!

Tati (GlamLifeGuru)– find her here

Oh, Tati… Some love her, some hate her. Her videos kept getting recommended to me on Youtube so I was like OKAY, OKAY, let’s see what this is all about. And to be honest, I kind of fell in love with her videos. As suggested in the name of her channel, she is a glamorous 30 something that just loves playing with makeup and sharing her opinion. She posts 5 videos a week, Monday to Friday, which is something admirable in my opinion, as a lot of other youtubers only posts 2, maybe 3 times. She talks about a mix of drugstore and luxury products and probably one of her most famous series are her ‘WTF’ ones where she tests these incredibly expensive cosmetics, such as £150 foundations- and vlogs throughout the day about how it’s holding up as well as her first impressions.

Now last but not least:

HONORABLE MENTION: Lisa Eldridge- you can find her here

First of all, how about that lipstick? Second of all, we cannot discuss beauty and youtube without mentioning THE GODDESS that Lisa Eldrige is.

Lisa Eldridge is probably one of the most famous and well established make up artists that have MADE IT. Besides being a makeup artist, writing a book (it’s out now- called Facepaint, if anyone is interested) and being a creative director for Lancome, she is taking time out of her super busy schedule to actually make videos for US. How lucky are we? If you don’t know how to do your make up or are out of inspiration, go check out her channel. Her soothing voice will guide you through hours of discussing the best makeup techniques, no matter your age or skin tone or type. She is absolutely incredible and is definitely somebody that I look up to in the industry.

So this is it guys. I hope you enjoyed this and definitely let me know who are your YOUR favorite beauty vloggers, as I am always looking for more inspiration :)

One brand haul and first impressions: Sleek Makeup

December 10, 2015

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about a recent mini haul where I got quite few things from Sleek, as well as my first impressions, as I’ve never tried this brand before.

I chose to get one of their palettes, the i-Divines Dark Mattes, a blush and one of their liquid lipsticks as I’ve seen few reviews about them and these days we all seem to love the mattes! Also Boots had a promotion with a free gift included,  so I got a free eye and cheek palette. Anyway, without further ado, let’s get into the details!

Ultra Mattes Palette Dark

The item that I am the most excited about is the i-Divine palette. I have heard quite few people talking about them and consider that it’s under £10 for 12 colors, it’s an absolute bargain. I chose the matte darks, as I don’t have anything that has dark blues and greens, compared to the usual light toned mattes.

The packaging is similar for all the products: black plastic packaging, nothing too fancy. which I personally prefer. Inside you will find the 12 shadow pans. The first thing that I noticed is that the palette has a plastic cover with the color names on it, which is super unpractical. What are you supposed to do- keep that forever so you know what shade you are using? Sleek, if you are reading this, sort yourselves out!

On to the actual eye shadows: the pigmentation is okay. The swatches that you see below have been worked up with 2-3 swipes to give you an idea of how the color could look like if you’re going to be patient and pack then on the lid. Out of the 12, 3 of the colors, more precisely the light colors are an absolute dud. They simply do not show AT ALL. As in nothing, nada, nicht. Which is a shame, as this means that you will always have to use this palette in combination with another light eye shadow for the brow bone or to add an accent. All in all, I am quite happy with the colors in this one and I would recommend it, as it helps create great smokey looks. I just wish the light colors would be more pigmented.

Blush in Flushed

I have previously heard very good things about their blushes, and while I initially thought of getting one of the three blushes palette, I ended up with just one so I can try out the formula. First of all, I obviously had to dip my nail in the pan (crying on the inside!) so my OCD self can have a heart attack as now it’s ruined forever.

I really like this blush and the color it gives. It might look a bit scary in the pan, however I find it that it gives you a nice…well, flush, as the names calls it, as if you’ve been out in the cold on a snowy day. I think this is more suited to medium and deeper skintones, as on a fair person it might look a bit more intense. But then again, if you want to make a statement, this is your blush! All in all, definitely this is my favorite product that I’ve tried from Sleek so far and I am looking forward to buy more shades.

Matte Me Lipstick in Birthday Suit

The other thing that I really wanted to get hands on was Sleek’s version of a liquid matte lipstick. They have, I believe, 6 or 8 shades, and normally I wuld go for a deep purple or red tone, however I looked up swatches and Birthday Suit seemed like such a beautiful slightly dusty rose nude color, that I could not contain myself. Initially, when I tried it, I was not very happy with the color at all. I felt like it washed me out entirely and I was ready to give up on it. However, I applied it a second time, this time with a lip liner under, a mauvy shade and it looked a lot better.

In terms of the quality, if you’re familiar with liquid to matte lipsticks, you’ll know that you apply it and leave it on for 30 seconds to one minute without touching it while it dries out. After that, you are free to go about your business and you can forget that you are wearing anything on the lips. Of course, this means that they will be quite drying so I suggest putting on a lip balm while doig your face makeup and blotting it before applying the lipstick- if you don’t blot it beforehand, the lipstick application might be stick or just not stick to your lips if that makes sense.

Below you can see the swatches for the lipstick after it dried out. I know it might look VERY pink here, but on my lips it pulls very, very light. Also next to it, you can see Flushed very feathered and blended, as well as an intentionally built up swatch to get an idea of the pigmentation and the color.

Eye and Cheek Palette in Midsummer’s Dream

Last but not least, my free gift! This is an eye and cheek palette as the name suggest and it has four eyeshadows and what I imagine they think is a blush and a bronzer. However, I would use both face products more as a bronzer, Both of them are very warm toned so I think they would be quite good if you are tanned or in summer to give you that JLo glow, girl!

However, let’s talk about the quality. The face products are ooo…kay. As in, I like them for the price that I got them for, but would I buy them separately? No. Clear and loud. They are not pigmented enough, one of them is too shiny and they are both very orangey so I think they are more suited as eyeshadows. In terms of the eyeshadows, as you can see, the lighter colors are a tiny bit better than they whites and creams from the palette so that is a plus however again, did not really blow my mind. The darker colors are slightly better yet again I am not sure if I will see myself reaching for this palette anytime soon. But then again, maybe come summer, I will change my mind.

So that is it guys. These are my first products ever from Sleek. Have you tried any of their products or do you have any recommendations? Let me know in the comments section below!

New in: Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencils

December 8, 2015

This year, I have fallen head over heels with gold, bronze, taupe and burgundy shade. I am all about dark or nude mauvy lips paired with intricate, both matte and metallic eye looks. Therefore, I am  continuously looking to add to my collection of deep colors. I already own the famous Milk Pencil from this range, which I love to use in particular under bright shadows to make the colors stand out even more, however I never tried any other colors from the range. Until now.

Jumbo Nyx Pencils Rust Iced Mocha French Fries

I have ordered three colors from Ebay, from Joy’s Cosmetics, here. She has a lot of great American products that you cannot get in the UK and A LOT of Nyx products at a very good price- and yes, I know that Boots has them online these days, but why would I pay almost double the price? I paid almost £10 for three Jumbo Pencils, a price that I am very happy with considering that I was not sure whether I would like them or not.

Jumbo Nyx Pencils Rust Iced Mocha French Fries
I chose to get Rust, Iced Mocha and French Fries. Rust is a beautiful dark burgundy with purple undertones, Iced Mocha is a frosty cool toned taupe brown and French Fries is a coppery bronze gold. Just looking at these three together makes me happy! In terms of the quality and the application, I haven’t had the chance to play with them as much I would love to, however I think they are great as a base for a darker look, especially a smokey eye or you can also use them as an eyeliner that you can smudge out to give you an ‘unfinished’ look, especially with French Fries.

They are very soft so definitely easy to apply however I am afraid that people with oily lids that normally have issues with creasing might not be able to enjoy these as much as someone with dry skin. Nonetheless I suggest that you try to set it with a translucent (either loose or pressed) powder and definitely use an eyelid primer before: you can actually check here for my drugstore suggestions.

The only negative thing that I have to say about these pencils at this point is what you might notice in the photo above: sometimes when you try to create a flawless look with them, they might be patchy, so when you try to go over a spot, it will pick up the product that is already there so you might end up with some holes on your lid. However, as I said before, these are mostly helpful when smudging them, so this shouldn’t really matter right?

All in all, I am looking forward to working on some smokey looks with these beautiful fall appropriate colors and update you on how I feel about them.

Have you tried any of the Nyx Jumbo pencils and if so, how do you incorporate them in your makeup routine? Let me know in the comment section below :)
